Share location with your smartphone: This is how it should be

Sharing your location temporarily is very useful. For example, if you have an appointment with someone in a place that is difficult to describe. Want to let someone know you're coming? Then sharing your live location might be even more convenient. For example, if you are on your way to someone by car and therefore cannot call, but you do want to let them know where you are. In this article you can read how you can quickly and securely share your location with your smartphone.

1. Share location via WhatsApp

WhatsApp is the most common way to share your location. Make sure you give the app permission to use location services, otherwise it won't work. To do this, look at 'Settings' and immediately make sure that the slider next to 'Exact location' is switched on.

On WhatsApp, open the chat of the person you want to share the location with (just like you would start a conversation with someone). You can also use a group app: useful if you want to notify several people at the same time.

Tap the + sign next to the text box and choose 'Location'.

In the menu that appears you have 3 options. a. Select 'Share live location' if you want the receiver to track your location for a certain time. After this, sharing your location will automatically stop. This option is useful when you get in the car and want to let someone know you're coming. b. Choose 'Send your current location' if you only want to share where you are at the time of sending. Also handy: in the fine print you can see how accurate the location you are sending is. c. Share a nearby place. Useful if your location determination is not so accurate (with a bad internet connection, for example). Another advantage of this is that you immediately have a landmark where you can both go.

2. Share location via Google Maps

Not using WhatsApp? Or were you already busy entering your navigation on Google Maps? The world's most used maps app now also has an option to share your (live) location!

Open the Google Maps app on your smartphone.

Tap your profile (top right, identified by your initials or the profile picture you've set).

Choose 'Share location'.

Choose how long your location can be shared and who you want to send this information to. This can also be done to several people at the same time!

Finished? Then tap 'Share'. Recipients with a Google account will immediately receive a notification. Does the recipient not have a Google account? Then he or she will receive a link with information about your location.

3. Share location via Facebook

Are you a hardcore Facebooker? Then use Live Location in Facebook Messenger.

Open Facebook Messenger, find the person you want to share your location with and open the chat.

Tap the + sign next to the text box and tap the navigation arrow (next to the poison symbol).

Are you using this feature for the first time? Then you have to give the app permission to view your location. Tap Allow (or: Allow only when using app) to continue.

Tap "Start Live Location Sharing" to get started. The receiver will now see your current location (accurate to a few meters) for 60 minutes. If you want to stop sharing sooner, tap 'Stop'.
