I usually only call for work. Hours of telephone chats with boyfriend or bff: not seen me! My phone plan is really all about the internet. I recently took out a sim-only subscription with 12GB data. Yes! Finally no more squeezing ass because my data bundle will or will not make it. And for the time being, no extra costs or über-sluggish internet because I use too much data. Because I have had to save on my data bundle for years and there are plenty of people who still have to be careful with their MBs every day, here are 5 tips on how to handle your mobile data smartly.
1. Choose a data bundle that you can also use abroad
Yes it's time! I've waited so long for this. The time that your data bundle is also valid in most foreign destinations. Whether I'm on the beach in Barcelona, on skis on an Austrian glacier or sending a message at my desk in Haarlem: it now all comes from the same data bundle. So handy! So keep that in mind when you take out a new subscription! It is not standard with all providers.
2. Keep an eye on your data yourself
Long live the apps that give you insight into your mobile usage. 'In the old days' (yes, I'm old) it was just guessing how much data you had left to go wild with apps, Instagramming and web calling. Nowadays you can see that with most mobile providers. This way you can keep an eye on it and bring yourself to a halt if you really get too close. In short: don't be shocked if your data bundle is used up and you still have a lot of month left.
3. Switch to a provider that gives you more data for your money
Whether it concerns an energy supplier , health insurer or telephone provider: switching pays off. I now have a Vodafone subscription with unlimited calling and texting and 12 GB (also abroad). For less than €30 per month. Yes SIM only. Nice deal, right? However, there is still a big difference between telephone providers. With one you pay a tenner for a good chunk of data. The other leaves you bent to pay for your internet addiction. Have you ever compared how much it cares? Via transfer.nl you can compare the cheapest SIM-only subscriptions in a few clicks .
4. Don't get your mail automatically
Your telephone is usually set up in such a way that mail is automatically downloaded. It all costs data, while most emails can wait a while. So turn off automatic mail synchronization. Especially if you're on vacation and enjoying yourself in the middle of nowhere. Then you don't even want to see those emails! Better save your data to send a fantastic holiday pic back home.

5. Turn off mobile data for (almost) all apps
Did you know you can turn off mobile data for apps? That indeed means that they don't work (or at least don't refresh) when you're on the road, but they do if you have WiFi. With an iPhone, you can determine separately for each app which you do and do not want to be able to use with mobile data. Super handy.
6. Don't always leave your apps open
My mother always does this. Every time I pick up her phone, I see that all the apps for the month are still open. haha. This means that all those 'programs' request data and are refreshed in the background. Doesn't make your data bundle happy.
7. Never update (operator or apps) if you don't have WiFi
Speaks for itself. It is better not to perform updates if you do not have WiFi. Gobbles up all your data.
8. Only let your chat apps download photos if you have Wi-Fi
Please educate Whatsapp and Telegram well and teach them to download photos only when you are connected to Wi-Fi.
9. Turn off automatic photo saving from apps
There's nothing more irritating than suddenly your entire camera roll is full of ugly, meaningless photos, your friends' dinner or 10 identical baby snaps of your girlfriend's newborn. I have automatic photo saving turned off in some apps. Because I find it annoying when they 'pollute' my photo album, but also because it costs more data than you think.
10. Don't let Facebook play videos automatically
When you are comfortably scrolling through your timeline, all of a sudden all kinds of videos that you don't necessarily want to see play. Ooooh, there goes your data bundle. For nothing. Such a shame! You can easily disable auto-play via your phone in the settings of your app.
11. Not streaming but offline playlists
Open door perhaps, but listening to playlists with nice music via YouTube and Spotify are major culprits when it comes to guzzling mobile data. And maybe you've saved so much data costs with these 15 tips that you can get a Spotify subscription and create offline playlists.
12. Connect to Wi-Fi automatically
Set up your phone to automatically connect to the Wi-Fi networks you've previously logged into. At home, at work, at the gym (at least mine did). And while it can be at the expense of your battery life, make sure that Wi-Fi is always on. It happened to me several times that I spent days on my data bundle watching YouTube videos in bed because I had WiFi turned off. Oops!
13. Beware of battery saver mode
I often turn on my battery saver when my phone has only 20% battery left and I still have a while to go. Prevent your device from switching from WiFi to 4G unnoticed by the battery saving mode.
14. Disable Push Notifications
'Free shipping only today', 'Your favorites are back in stock'. You know. One of those push messages that you can do without. Sometimes they are even downright annoying. Please switch off push notifications. Saves a bit of data.
15. Watch out for Wi-Fi assistance
Since iOS9, your iPhone has a new option: Wi-Fi assistance. And that is quite a bit dangerous for your data bundle. Your iPhone automatically switches to 4G if the WiFi is not so good. You can disable this annoying setting via settings > mobile network > uncheck Wi-Fi assistance.
