You know the feeling: if you just want to take a nice picture with your phone, your storage space is full! With the 6 tips in this article (and handy bonus tip!) you can be sure that this will never happen to you again.
Tip 1. Smartphone storage space almost full? Check your memory usage!
Do you want to know how much storage space you have left on your phone? Follow the steps below to check your memory usage. This is also useful if you are looking for a new smartphone and want to know how much storage space you need.
Check storage space on your iPhone
- Open the 'Settings' app.
- Tap "General."
- Go to 'iPhone Storage'. You can now see exactly how much space your apps, photos and other files are taking up (and what you can save).
Check storage space on your Android

Tip 2. Delete apps
Apps take up a lot of space on your phone. Especially if you have installed a lot of games, you will notice that you will quickly run out of storage capacity. Fortunately, your iPhone has a handy option for quickly removing barely-used apps from your smartphone. Android doesn't have a standard function built in for this, but it does have the ability to quickly check the size of all your apps. This way you quickly know which apps use the most of your memory.
Delete apps on your iPhone
- Open the 'Settings' app.
- . Tap "General."
- Go to 'iPhone Storage'.
- Tap Clean Up Apps. Apps that you do not use are automatically removed from your smartphone after some time.

Tip 3. Delete cache and cookies
Many smartphones lose a lot of storage capacity due to cookies and other invisible files. It can pay to erase it every now and then. Every bit helps!

Tip 4. Delete videos and photos
Many of your photos, for example from WhatsApp but also in Google Photos, are automatically stored in the cloud. Handy, until it is full and your smartphone's memory is next. Below you can read how you can quickly and permanently delete all those backups. Just be sure to save your photos elsewhere before completely deleting them from your phone. You won't get them back.
Delete photos on your iPhone
- Open Photos and select the photos you want to delete.
- Tap the Trash (bottom right corner).

Tip 5. Delete Downloads
In your files (iPhone) or downloads folder (Android) you usually find a lot of unused junk, such as photos and documents that you once grabbed from the Internet (and probably forgot about it right away!). You remove them very easily.
Delete downloads on your iPhone
- Go to the 'Files' app.
- Select the files you want to delete.
- Tap 'Delete'. Note: Deleting files from the iCloud Drive folder will also delete them from your other devices.
Download delete on your Android

Tip 6. Expand Android memory
Still don't have enough space for all your videos, photos and other files? Some Android smartphones also allow you to expand the storage space with a microSD card .
Expand memory on your iPhone
Extending your iPhone works a little differently than Android phones. It is not possible to expand the memory of your Apple with a microSD card. By default, Apple gives you 5 GB of storage space for storing files in iCloud. For example, you can move your photos there and save a reduced copy on your iPhone. Is this storage full? For 99 cents per month you can buy (with a credit card) 50 GB of iCloud storage. Ideal for all your photo and video material from recent years.
Bonus tip: Avoid pollution
The same applies to the memory of your smartphone: prevention is better than cure. Be critical of what you want to keep and make sure you have a good system for organizing your photos and other files. For example, the Tidy app is a popular alternative to Apple's and Google's photo gallery. And save your files somewhere else once a month, for example on an external hard drive or on your laptop. That immediately gives you the opportunity to go through it with the broom!
