Happy Privacy Day! Since 2007, it has been Privacy Day in Europe, the US and Canada on January 28 every year. The purpose of the day is to inform citizens about the rights they have with governments, companies and other organizations that use their personal data. You don't have much control over what they do with your data. But you can make sure that the wealth of data on your phone is better protected. Do you want the data on your smartphone to be better protected? These tips will get you started:


Tip 1: delete your data after theft


If your phone is stolen, your data could fall into the wrong hands. Unless you've made your phone crook-proof, because then a thief won't come in just like that. Tip 2: backup, thumbs up!


Whoever keeps what has what. Whether it is a theft or an accidental fall: with a good and recent backup you will certainly not lose your data. A lot of phone data is automatically backed up, such as WhatsApp and photos. But not necessarily everything. And it also depends on your operating system and settings. Tip 3: two-step verification


Two-step verification is an extra security measure in addition to your password. The first step is to enter your username and password. In the second step, you enter a unique code that will be sent to a trusted device and can only be used once. More and more services offer two-step verification, such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Google, iCloud and Instagram. The government also uses it for DigiD. Tip 4: keep your software up to date


The following applies to software: if it is outdated, it may contain security holes. Therefore, make sure that both your operating system (iOS or Android) and your apps are up-to-date. Do you have apps that you never use or that you see in the App or Play Store that have not been updated for a long time (say: more than a year)? Then delete them from your phone.


Tip 5: which app is allowed what?


If you install an app, you often give it access to certain data. You can here 's how it works. Do you have doubts about what the app does with your data and / or read bad reviews in the App or Play Store? Then you can choose not to download the app. Do you not trust an app 100% and can you create a profile instead of linking your Facebook account? Then create a profile. Tip 7: apps individually under lock and key


Are there any apps or functions with confidential information that you want to protect extra? For Android phones this is possible with AppLock . This allows you to lock, for example, WhatsApp, your contacts, mobile banking or the photo gallery with your own password or swipe pattern. You can lock apps on your iPhone via the Restrictions function in the Settings menu .


Tip 8: new phone, clean slate


Do you have a new phone and your old one is going to a friend, buyer or recycling ? Don't forget to wipe your former loading companion drastically clean. You can read how to do that here .


Tip 9: snapshots in the cloud


Your phone is probably full of cool photos. Possibly even packed, because photos take up a lot of space. The solution? Automatically sync with a cloud service, so you can delete the photos immediately afterwards. Google Photos is ideal. In contrast to other cloud services such as iCloud , Microsoft OneDrive and Dropbox, you get unlimited storage space for free. The cloud is very safe , so your privacy is guaranteed. Need some extra security? Then lock the cloud app on your phone via the apps AppLock (Android) or Restrictions (iOS).


Tip 10: privacy screen protector


Imagine that you are on the train and you want to digitally pay back a friend for that dinner last night. Then it is great if not everyone can see that you enter your personal code when you want to transfer the money via internet banking. You can prevent this with a so-called privacy screen protector, which ensures that people who view your screen from the side can no longer see what you are doing on your phone. Tip 11: change all your passwords


It never hurts to change all your passwords once in a while. Unnecessary luxury? Take a joke on HaveIBeenPwned.com to find out if your password has been looted by hackers in the past. Tip 12: don't use your own email address everywhere


Sometimes a website asks for your email address when you only need something from them once. You can use your own e-mail address, but you can of course also use a temporary e-mail address that will expire after ten minutes. That is exactly what 10MinuteMail.com does. This way you still get what you want, but you do not have to worry that you will subsequently receive all advertisements on your personal e-mail address.


Tip 13: incognito mode


You can browse the internet on your phone in a kind of private mode. If you access the internet in this mode, your search history will not be tracked. Some websites cannot track your search behavior that way either. Very nice if, for example, you are looking for a weekend away to surprise your partner! Tip 14: ad tracking


Many ads that you see on your device are displayed based on the apps on your phone and the things you do on the internet. Fortunately, you can limit this access to personal information if you dive into the menu of your mobile phone. For Android devices you can find here more information, iOS there . Tip 15: safe folder


People with a slightly newer Samsung device have access to a so-called Secure Folder. Here you can put all your files, photos, videos and apps under lock and key.
